Starship | SN9 | High-Altitude Flight Test

Birt 2 feb 2021
On Tuesday, February 2, Starship serial number 9 (SN9) completed SpaceX’s second high-altitude flight test of a Starship prototype from our site in Cameron County, Texas.
Similar to the high-altitude flight test of Starship serial number 8 (SN8), SN9 was powered through ascent by three Raptor engines, each shutting down in sequence prior to the vehicle reaching apogee - approximately 10 kilometers in altitude. SN9 successfully performed a propellant transition to the internal header tanks, which hold landing propellant, before reorienting itself for reentry and a controlled aerodynamic descent.
The Starship prototype descended under active aerodynamic control, accomplished by independent movement of two forward and two aft flaps on the vehicle. All four flaps are actuated by an onboard flight computer to control Starship’s attitude during flight and enable precise landing at the intended location. During the landing flip maneuver, one of the Raptor engines did not relight and caused SN9 to land at high speed and experience a RUD.
These test flights are all about improving our understanding and development of a fully reusable transportation system designed to carry both crew and cargo on long-duration, interplanetary flights and help humanity return to the Moon, and travel to Mars and beyond.

  • We just have to work on that landing a little bit. Hi SpaceX, could I interest you in this wondrous device called a parachute?

  • Its not a failure ,this is what testing is for

  • 加油 space X. 👍 GO.GO.GO 人類的期待.靠你們了!

  • Did it fizzle or 💥. It burnt up.

  • 1 month later and still that sound right before seeing the explosion still sends a shiver down my spine

  • Damn that thing made a mini mushroom cloud

    • while SN10 is on the side watching all this and nervous about it will be the next.

  • SN10: hold my martians

    • Who's here after SN10 landing was successful?

  • * God's grace * Did you know that God loves you so much that he sent Jesus to save us? Jesus is the son of God! And he loves you very much! To have proof of this, we can say that he emptied himself of all his glory and stepped on the earth! Isn't that wonderful? And there's more! He assured us of salvation! He fulfilled the mission that God gave him! Which is to have a death on the cross for all people in the world! * How do I get to heaven? * It's very simple! -Accept Jesus as your Lord and only Savior! - Repent of your sins daily even those you don't know because you sinned out of ignorance! -Recognize that you do not deserve God's salvation but even with your faults He wanted to save you with his great love and grace! Now about keeping your faith -Read the Bible daily -Pray and fast -Go to a church that follows the word of God May God bless you greatly! 👋

  • Who gives a flying fuck a bout this shit while our country is going to hell!

  • parabéns, sucesso!

  • 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🇺🇸🤮

  • Calm down and leave it to Russians.

  • Dear Space X Engineers and Staff. I think what you have accomplished is nothing short of outstanding! I would like to share a thought please if I may. I was wondering if we could alter the landing of the Starship to land in the horizontal position, then utilizing mechanical limbs and or an exoskeleton, right the ship upon landing. I have noticed several anomalies while scouring the video library. Blow back of fuel and gases into the engine cone among other concerning items. I feel the fuel consumption and stress upon the rocket, engines and systems would be significantly reduced with a horizontal landing and a righting of the ship for secondary takeoff. Thank you for allowing me to share Frank.bua@comcast.net

  • and this is why SN10 burns all 3 engines for the flip.

  • Maybe Elon will not live his final day on Earth, but we know he will forever live among the stars. You are a role model to any and all nerds who were bullied.

  • "rocket is fine?, its just a scratch"

  • Son of a bitch, how did I miss these flights?!

  • The failure is a great teacher.

  • F

  • what is the smoke from the bottom of rocket before lift off

    • Its call the rocket venting its used for blowing excess fuel out

  • Who's here after SN10 landing was successful?

    • lucky it didnt hit the other freckin rocket

  • while SN10 is on the side watching all this and nervous about it will be the next.

  • women countdowners, no survivors

  • opps

  • 12:00 Little did he know that he was the next, and that he would stick the landing, and that he then would proceed to explode in honor of his brother.

  • 12:00 that hurts :(

  • After sn10 successfull landing and explosion

  • ఇలాంటి ప్రయోగాలు జరుగుతునే ఉండాలి..... అలాంటి అప్పుడే మన ఉనికి ఉంటుంది....

  • Here after SN10 Landed!!

  • Anyone here after SN10?

  • I come from the future and sn10 stuck its landing

  • Who came back here after watching SN10 landing ? 🙌

  • All the people went uh oh stinky

  • lucky it didnt hit the other freckin rocket

  • SN10: Cool but no like me

  • Бывает...

  • Whose back after SN10??!?!

  • Hello from the future, SN10 just landed safely. (With a nice surprise afterwards)

  • Who’s here after sn10 successfully landed

    • And successfully flew again with an explosion 😂

  • nice~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thank you for giving a man hope Musk. SN10 just amazing.

  • Wow congrats. That was awesome

  • Congratulations. Just need to work on though landing legs.

  • That was amazing!

  • Munianio,Pozdrawiam z rodzinkom i michałkiem i igorkiem i KNYPKIEM

  • F

  • Just great

  • 1 month later sn10 is sitting on the pad. It's aborted 1 time and as of now it is 35 minutes from the second attempt. Whether sn10 will be the one to do it or not who knows but we will see them land one of these dammit

  • Only those who never give up win! "There are men who fight for a while and they are good, there are others who fight for a long time and they are very good, there are those who fight for a lifetime, these are essential!" (phrase previously said) Let's hope the next Test Flight is successful on landing too ...

  • I know how to deal with that if you ready ,i will prove you ,just reply me

  • MVP commentator. Real smooth :D

  • How about we make it lands horizontally like the plane?

  • 7 minutes to the SN10 launch and I am hyped!!!

  • 20 minutes before liftoff of SN10. This time, i think, we will see a wonderful landing of Starship.

  • whose currently waiting for SN10

  • Pull up this time boys

  • This time - stick the landing!

  • I wish I could hear the roar of the raptor engines in person

  • DEAR #yusaku maezawa @yusaku maezawa #elonmusk @elonmusk PLEASE EMPLOY ME OR TAKE ME ON ANY SPACE MISSION. I'VE DREAMED SINCE I WAS A CHILD TO GO TO SPACE. EVERYTHING FROM THE HISTORY, THE ENGINEERING, THE ROCKETS, SPACE CRAFTS, THE SUITES, THE LAUNCH PADS, THE BUILDINGS, THE TECHNOLOGY, THE TRAINING, FEELING ZERO G, JUST ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING ABOUT SPACE AMAZES ME. I spend every night watching hours of videos on you tube on all the above I just stated. It fascinates me and is just the most amazing thing imaginable. IVE signed up for every space competition imaginable, I donated to St.Judes to try and win, Ive prayed to be able to fly to and spend time on the ISS. About me: I come from a very poor background and I've had many obstacles to overcome in my life but I have not let it overcome me I let it make me! I love everyone and anyone who knows me would tell you that I would give you the shirt off my back and I would do anything to make you smile no matter what! I believe anything is achievable if you put your mind to it and people like you both prove that everyday and continue to push the envelope and show us all that anything is possible. I don't even know if y'all will ever even read my comments I have posted on many of your social media but if for some chance you do please at least give me a shot at doing something as incredible as y'all both have. I try to to make the world a more beautiful place every day and try and make people love each other as much as possible. Alone we are small but together we are larger than life and we can achieve anything. My wife and my children support my love with space and know that it is my dream to fly aboard a space shuttle and to one day arrive and spend time on the ISS or some other space facility in the future. Just like everyone else I work hard everyday dreaming of the American dream of being successful and Rich so I too could fulfill my space curiosity and bless those who are less fortunate because I know personally what it is like to dream your entire life and hoping every day for your dreams to come true. I'll continue to push myself and work hard and at least enjoy my space ISmem videos and tell you both I think you're both amazing awesome people and doing amazing things that must be done to push us further then we ever have been before. I would love to work for one of you and to be able to have full access and explore the facilities and Technologies you have both created what a dream that would be!!

  • Who's here a half hour before sn10 flight attempt on 03-03-2021?

  • yeeee

  • Уряяяяяяя!!!!!

  • I am sure they can do it. ❤️

  • The SN9 is dead, long live the SN10!

  • PÜFF

  • One month ago sn9 today sn10 in 2 weeks sn11 in another 2 weeks sh then one week after sn15 and then weekly tests of different SN's and end of the year first orbital launch

  • Looks like it got blown out...

  • JUST AMAZING.

    • Honestly it's impressive how far SpaceX's reusable tech has come. When they finally have the thing behaving itself, I'd ride it. Humanity's greatest accomplishments are storie

  • Mission failed we'll get em next time

  • There need to be some kind of parachute legs that are opening at landing on the base of the rocket

    • Or you could just land it softly using the engines

  • Tbh it prob will take 5 times to land it just like the falcon 9 booster

  • I’m still surprised on that boom

  • WRONG approach procedure DESIGN, is what we really saw here. The 2 engines RESTART needs to happen SOONER in the descent, HIGHER, and it needs to be with THREE ENGINES, NOT TWO, WHICH means a more stable and reliable power source is needed. SO, IN ANY CASE, RESTART HIGHER UP AND WITH AT LEAST THE SAME NUMBER OF ENGINES AS IT TAKES TO TAKE OFF, or in any case the same power available (per weight, of course). It takes MORE POWER to safely decelerate THAN to safely leave ground. Re-design !

    • Imagine thinking your "solution" is better than that of a multi billion dollar company, they lose a lot of performance if they would do it higher up.

    • Ctrl C + ctrl V

  • I say they need a more stable re-light, spaceX knows it; and they need more time to relight safely, hence they need to relight sooner, higher up, with more engines and more power available. SpaceX knows more time adds time for more safety but they will see if they can make it with the bare minimum of time and only add more reliability. My opinion here is that the latter priority is unethical.

    • I was starting to miss your comments

  • mmm data, thanks mom my favorite!

  • T-10: 5:15 Last Engine Shutdown: 9:56 Engine Startup: 11:41 RUD: 11:52

  • Whats the similarity between Starship and toiletpaper. They both circling around Uranus looking for Klingons

  • Rip for head phone users when the starship launched

  • oh dear, i think i dropped something...

  • Watching this before sn10 launch attempt tomorrow and if it is tomorrow get rid of the commentary it kinda ruined it for me

  • Elon!!!! Look at Jetoptera and it’s tech for EVtol’s. It’s design is inspired by Viktor Schauberger the Tesla of fluidic dynamics.

  • Eyy. Only reason we got to the Moon is because a pile of shit exploded on or around the launchpad. I have faith. It goes up, now just gotta work on going back down again. Honestly it's impressive how far SpaceX's reusable tech has come. When they finally have the thing behaving itself, I'd ride it. Humanity's greatest accomplishments are stories of failing upwards spectacularly until that one time it all works. Showing all of this, complete disclosure, and even going as far as that rather humorous failure compilation, engenders trust. When it finally does its job, we'll know how much effort was put behind it to get it there.

  • When they stick the landing the Russian judge will only give them a 6.4 . Waiting for SN-10 !

  • What is control saying after the crash ? I keep trying to figure it out but english isn't my first language

  • Seems like those engines are not reliable. By two launches, they would have a 50-50% chance of not lighting up. So if we use three engines and shut up the failed one, still that leaves the probability of 67% of landing correctly with 3 engines. Now if they have say 7 engines, still the fundamental problem remains- they are not reliable when starting. Imagine taking all costly payload to Mars and the mission would fail only because those engines couldn't function reliably.

    • These engines were made from scratch just like starship. It will fail from time to time because of how new it is. That is how they gain the amazing amount of data they get

    • @Jack Whitlock yes it is. And I m sure they will come up with innovative solutions.

    • @Saurabh Chandra The Raptor engine is still in development

    • @Jack Whitlock also, merlin engines are 99% reliable and having multiple engines do help, but raptor is made to do multiple flights in a short period of time without refirbishment. They got to ensure that the engines fire at the right moment and not too late

    • @Jack Whitlockif not being able to fire up at the right moment isn't a measure of reliability, I don't know what is. They should improve their engines first.

  • I love the fact that the subsonic entry was so stable! I truly appreciate the fact that SpaceX never steps back from showing us what is original, including the failures that lead to success! I know the Starship is going to be a masterpiece. Congratulations!

  • We watch live the things that will be celebrated in a hundred thousand years.

  • Little fuel left, no wonder the kaboom is only shortlived.... well done Elon

  • The so called astronauts are wasteing billions and trillons on the fu*king robot or rover Why? why to shift on other palnet where there is no oxygen ,food and any resources try to make our planet clean the rockets are a simply waste. Our earth is full of poverty, with the money end the poverty, clean degraded environment, provide food to needy ,first make our earth full of every thing .... IF EVER IN YOUR HOUSE THE TAP GOT LEAKED YOU WILL REPAIR THE TAP ,NOT SHIFT TO THE HOUSE WHERE THERE IS NO AVAILABILITY OF WATER ..

  • One step closer to Mars.

  • Its like watching a movie but not really

  • Wow !

  • Well if there's any martians sleeping on mars they sure wont be when this thing comes in to land lmao

  • Never give up musk keep trying to go to mars

  • Why couldn’t this be around when I was in high school

  • Kerbal Space Program In A Nutshell

  • Ahh, another failed test flight...But we are wishing luck to get through those obstacles Mr.Elon Mask and other people that are working hard for this mission to be accomplished.... Wishing Luck.............

    • @AryaTech Two failed landings

    • @Jack Whitlock yeh only the landing failed it was successful. but they failed i think 3 flights right?

    • This wasn’t a failed test fight. It successfully reached its apogee and controlled itself up until landing.

  • Please just add a giant parachute 👻
